Dmitri Shostakovich’s music to the film Sofya Perovskaya

This publication is based on the author’s manuscript kept in Dmitri Shostakovich’s Archive: rec. gr. 1, section 1, f. 255—15 items, as well as on a photocopy of the author’s manuscript kept in the library of the State Symphony Cinema Orchestra: f. 2519—items The March, The Execution, Waltz. The 1987 edition is also used: D. Shostakovich, Collected Works, in 42 vols., Vol. 42, Muzyka Publishers, Moscow.

The author’s manuscript of the score does not always correspond to the soundtrack of the film. In some items, there are cuts and inserts, other items are not used in full in the film, while still others (or their fragments) are repeated in different places of the film. There is also music that does not feature in the author’s manuscript, while certain items only feature in the author’s manuscript and are not used in the film.

This publication is based on the 1987 edition in Dmitri Shostakovich, Collected Works, in 42 vols., Vol. 42, Muzyka Publishers, Moscow, collated with the author’s manuscript kept in Dmitri Shostakovich’s Archive—rec. gr. 1, section 1, f. 239. The author’s manuscript of the score does not always correspond to the way the music actually sounds in the film. In some items, there are cuts and inserts, other items are not used in full in the film, while still others (or their fragments) are repeated in different places of the film. There is also music in the film that does not feature in the author’s manuscript, while certain items only feature in the author’s manuscript and are not used in the film. This edition is published in accordance with the author’s manuscript.

The differences between the author’s manuscript of the score and the music that actually sounds in the soundtrack of the film are given in comments.
