The 1982 edition is also used (Collected Works, Vol. 32, Muzyka Publishers, Moscow), as well as two author’s orchestral versions—for symphonic orchestra (author’s manuscript, SCMMC, rec. gr. 32, f. 87. A copy is kept in Dmitri Shostakovich’s Archive, rec. gr. 1, section 1, f. 125) and for chamber orchestra (Collected Works, Vol. 31, Muzyka Publishers, Moscow, 1982).

Five Romances on Verses by Yevgeni Dolmatovsky

There are two author’s manuscripts: fair—SCMMC (rec. gr. 32, f. 59) and rough (original)—RSALA (rec. gr. 2048, inv. 1, f. 54. A copy is kept in Dmitri Shostakovich’s Archive, rec. gr. 2, section 1, f. 287), which has a large number of discrepancies (different keys, incongruous notes, different bowings, added bars, and so on). These discrepancies are specified in the Explanatory Notes and Bar-by-Bar Comments to Appendix II.

Romance “There Were Kisses...” on Verses by Yevgeni Dolmatovsky

The romance “There Were Kisses” was originally planned as part of the cycle on verses by Yevgeni Dolmatovsky, Оp. 98. The poet sent Shostakovich the text of this poem along with the texts of the other five romances. The author’s manuscript of the romance was written on the same paper and in the same ink and followed immediately after the last item in the cycle, “The Day of Reminiscences”. But for some unknown reason Shostakovich did not include it in the cycle of romances, Op. 98, leaving it as a separate composition, Sans op. In the author’s manuscript, the romance was not numbered, nor did it have a title, in contrast to the previous romances of the cycle. This composition was first published 30 years after it was written in Dmitri Shostakovich’s Collected Works by Muzyka Publishers in 1982 (Vol. 31). The next edition of the romance came out in 1987 in the collection Romances and Songs on Verses by Yevgeni Dolmatovsky (Sovetsky kompozitor Publishers, Moscow).
